IIHS Announces Top Safety Pick Award Winners for 2022

Published on February 24, 2022 in News by Guillaume Rivard

Vehicles keep getting safer and more advanced, as evidenced by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) identifying 65 different models as a 2022 Top Safety Pick+, up from 49 in 2021 and 22 in 2020.

If you also count the 36 other models that were named a 2022 Top Safety Pick, that brings the total to 101 award winners. Some vehicles have yet to be tested by the IIHS for 2022, but they could join the list later in the year.

Both awards require good ratings in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests — driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Award winners must be available with front crash prevention that earns a superior or advanced rating in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

Last but not least, Top Safety Pick winners must be available with good or acceptable headlights. The “plus” designation is given to models that have good or acceptable headlights across all trim levels and packages, not just a few of them.

Along with improving their headlight offerings this year, manufacturers made vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention standard on more models, the IIHS points out.

Hyundai (including Kia and Genesis), Volkswagen (including Audi) and Volvo are the automakers with the most 2022 awards. Also notable, Mitsubishi earned its first-ever award as the Outlander was named a Top Safety Pick+.
