John DeLorean’s Daughter to Build Her Own Modern DeLorean
The reinvention of the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 finally came to life earlier this year, but with mixed reviews. Called Alpha 5, it’s the work of DeLorean Motor Company, the Humble, Texas-based company which acquired the DeLorean trademarks and vast stocks of parts left over from the original factory and dealers.
Perhaps no one hates it more than Kat DeLorean, the daughter of legendary automotive engineer John Z. DeLorean. She didn’t just express her displeasure on social media: she’s fighting back with her own modern vision and plans to enter production as early as January of 2023.

An official reveal is scheduled to take place before the end of the year. In the meantime, renderings of the car—which will go by the name of Model-JZD in honour of Kat’s father, who passed away in 2005—have surfaced online. While futuristic, for sure, the new model is arguably closer to the design and spirit of the original than the aforementioned Alpha 5, starting with the slightly more angular body. Of course, gullwing doors are part of the mix.
No technical details are available for now. It’s pretty safe to assume the Model-JZD will feature an all-electric powertrain.
“Kat was integral on countless engineering projects with her father, including the next cutting edge sports car before his unexpected passing in 2005. Her engineering background, and direct involvement, make Kat the perfect successor to finish where John DeLorean left off,” the press release says.
A new company known as DeLorean Next Generation Motors, or DNG Motors, oversees the endeavour including production in Detroit. Kat DeLorean can count on some of the top automotive minds in the industry, alongside a portion of the original team that helped create the DMC-12 more than 40 years ago...
Her mission goes beyond just building cars and creating jobs, mind you. She indeed plans to introduce a new engineering program to public high schools in the U.S. that will provide a direct pathway to apprenticeships and engineering programs at major universities.
