Tesla Cybertruck Mass Production to Start in 2024 After All

The Tesla Cybertruck has become a unicorn since first showing up as a prototype in November 2019. Is it real or not? The launch of the production model has been delayed multiple times, and the latest projection is the summer of 2023.

While discussing the company’s Q4 earnings earlier this week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he expects production to start sometime this summer as planned, without being more specific.

However, to the disappointment of many eager customers, Musk warned that only a limited number of units will roll off the new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, this year.

“I always try and downplay the start of production because start of production is always very slow,” he said before adding that volume production of the Cybertruck won’t start until 2024.

To this day, over 1.5 million people have reportedly made a deposit to secure a copy. It’s currently possible to do so via Tesla Canada’s website ($150 deposit). Needless to say U.S. customers will be prioritized at first, meaning those north of the border will likely have to wait until next year, maybe longer.

Sometime between now and the start of production this summer (unless there’s yet another delay), Tesla should finally reveal the road-going Cybertruck and confirm specs and pricing.

Just over a year ago, Musk said that a new top-line configuration with four motors (one controlling each wheel) has been added to the lineup and will actually be the first to come out of the Gigafactory in Texas. It will replace the tri-motor variant that was initially announced with a price tag of $69,900 USD and a range of about 800 kilometres. We’re guessing the price will be much higher now, but it remains to be seen how much the extra motor will affect range.
