Standard-Range Tesla Model Y With RWD is Back, Starts Under $60K

After dramatically slashing prices on its Model Y crossover (and the rest of its lineup) earlier this year, Tesla is now adding a new entry-level model in Canada with an even lower price.

Featuring a single motor and rear-wheel drive, this model starts at $59,990.

It’s not only $10,000 cheaper than the dual-motor, AWD-equipped Model Y Long Range, but because the base MSRP is below $60,000, the newest Model Y is eligible to the $5,000 EV rebate from the Canadian government. And that, in turns, makes the Long Range variant eligible, too.

Provincial rebates also apply to the Model Y Standard Range including up to $4,000 in B.C. and $7,000 in Quebec.

Of course, range and acceleration are affected. The single-motor Model Y can travel up to 394 km instead of 531 km (remember, Elon Musk once said that offering less than 400 km wasn’t worth it) and it sprints from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds instead of 5 seconds. For many drivers, though, these numbers will be satisfying enough.

And unlike most EVs that currently take forever to roll off the line and land in driveways, this one won’t test customers’ patience. According to Tesla’s online configurator, orders made today would be delivered sometime between May and July. UPDATE: Reuters is reporting that the Model Y RWD will be imported to Canada from China, which would be a first for Tesla in North America.

The addition of a sub-$60K Model Y is most definitely a response to the growing number of competitively priced electric SUVs hitting the market, such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, Volkswagen ID.4, Toyota bZ4X and more.
