Electric 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Debuts With Range-Extending V6

Published on November 7, 2023 in New Models by Guillaume Rivard

The fully electric Ram 1500 REV introduced earlier this year at the New York Auto Show is just one part of the significantly updated 2025 Ram 1500 lineup. Another major highlight is the equally new and electric Ram 1500 Ramcharger, which features an internal combustion engine as a range-extending generator.

It’s the ultimate electric truck,” Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis claims. “You’ll never need to worry about range or stopping at a public charger.”

Built on the same STLA Frame architecture, though with key modifications, the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger uses a smaller 92kWh battery yet delivers as much as 663 horsepower and more than 615 lb-ft. of torque with its dual-motor setup, enabling 0-60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration in 4.4 seconds. It boasts a best-in-class 14,000 lbs towing capacity with a class 5 hitch and a best-in-class maximum payload capacity of 2,625 lbs.

Impressed? Wait, we haven’t talked about range yet. This truck can travel up to an estimated 1,110 km thanks to an on-board generator—none other than a specially tuned 3.6-litre V6—that charges the battery on the go. There is no mechanical link between the engine and the wheels, so the Ramcharger is not what most people would call a plug-in hybrid even though it burns gas.

Another interesting feature is vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home bi-directional charging capability, allowing owners to charge another battery-electric vehicle or provide power back to the grid. The truck can also send power to a home during a storm, run the tailgate party or provide power at the camp or jobsite. An onboard power panel in the bed can provide up to 7.2 kW.

Of course, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger can plug into a public charger when necessary. It has the ability to add up to 80 km of all-electric range in approximately 10 minutes with 400-volt DC fast charging at up to 145 kW, the company says.

Multiple Trim Levels

Clearly, Ram has designed this electric pickup for workers first and foremost. Want further evidence? The Ramcharger is available in several trim levels starting with the more affordably priced Tradesman and Big Horn. Customers who desire more luxury can turn to the Limited or the new Tungsten, which returns to the Ram 1500 lineup for 2025.

In all cases, standard content includes an adaptative air suspension, hands-free highway driving assist, RamBox storage compartments on each side of the cargo bed, a new power tailgate and a new RAM logo.

In addition to premium exterior touches, the fancy Ramcharger Tungsten stands out with a two-tone Indigo/Sea Salt interior, new metallic accents, a suede headliner and pillars, as well as heated and ventilated premium quilted Natura Plus leather front seats with 24-way power adjustments, including memory settings and a massage function. Let’s not forget the 1,228-watt, 23-speaker Klipsch Reference Premiere audio system.

Also notable are the displays. There’s a 10-inch colour head-up display and 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster facing the driver, a portrait-style, 14.5-inch touchscreen with split-screen functionality and Uconnect 5 infotainment in the middle, plus a 10.25-inch passenger-side display for navigation and entertainment.

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is expected go on sale in the U.S. before the end of 2024—likely the first half of 2025 in Canada. The company has not given any clues about pricing but is already accepting pre-orders online.
