Ford F-150 Raptor R Gets Extra Power, Now Trumps Ram 1500 TRX

The debut of the refreshed and updated 2024 Ford F-150 in September failed to address the most potent and most extreme model in the lineup. At last, the secret is now out.

The F-150 Raptor R returns for a second year, only this time with more power under the hood. The supercharged 5.2-litre V8 has been upgraded to generate 720 horsepower, a gain of 20 horsepower that is more symbolic than anything. Why? Because it gives the Raptor R bragging rights over the Ram 1500 TRX, which is currently rated at 702 horsepower.

And remember, the latter will be replaced by the all-new Ram 1500 RHO for 2025, dropping the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 and relying on a high-output version of Stellantis’ twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder “Hurricane” engine. Limited to 540 horsepower, the model will be shown sometime in the first half of 2024 and go on sale in the summer.

Back to the 2024 F-150 Raptor R, the extra output is the result of reduced air inlet losses coupled with optimized engine calibration. Peak torque is unchanged at 640 lb-ft (incidentally 10 lb-ft short of the TRX), but Ford says the torque curve is wider.

There are no other changes to report, by the way. As for the standard F-150 Raptor, the one producing 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, available FOX Dual Live Valve shock absorbers improve low- and high-speed trail performance. It also benefits from a few cosmetic revisions and a new model-specific Shelter Green body colour.

Canadian pricing starts at $108,895 including freight, PDI and other fees but not the federal luxury tax. Ford has yet to say how much the 2024 F-150 Raptor R will cost.
