The Best Electric SUVs and Crossovers in 2024
The selection of electric SUVs and crossovers keeps expanding in 2024. The Chevrolet Blazer EV and Honda Prologue are finally arriving, while the Hyundai Kona Electric is completely redesigned. You also have to keep an eye on the VinFast VF 6 and VF 7 coming from Vietnam, not to mention the Chevrolet Equinox EV whose launch was delayed but could be the cheap electric crossover many are waiting for.
What are the best buys in the segment for Canadian drivers? The team at The Car Guide has analyzed all the various models available and identified the top three below.

Among mainstream models, South Korea’s Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 are hands down the best picks for 2024. While they have a lot in common beyond their wildly different exteriors, the former gets the edge due to a slightly roomier and more convenient interior.
Both make a pretty convincing case with their solid performance (topped by the 576-horsepower EV6 GT), remarkable range (up to nearly 500 km) and unbeatable fast-charging capability (about 220 kW from the most powerful DC chargers). Technology is beautifully integrated, too, and good towing capacity adds to their practicality.
Alas, long delivery times continue to be a problem, as well as the absence of a rear window wiper that compromises visibility in inclement weather.
Here’s a spacious electric SUV with good driving dynamics—smooth, balanced, comfortable—and a reasonable waiting list. For those who have a camping trailer or a boat, the ID.4 can now tow up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped, which easily trumps other vehicles in the segment.
That’s because the updated 2024 model gets a more powerful rear motor (280 horsepower). Officially, maximum range is anywhere between 332-468 km depending on the configuration (two battery packs are available), but we’ve been able to drive a bit farther than that in ideal conditions. During winter, however, you’ll hardly manage more than 300 km due to the lack of a heat pump, among other things.
3. Nissan Ariya
Rounding out the podium is the best electric SUV from Japan. Forget the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the Ariya is a more compelling and competitive product, especially from a technology standpoint. It’s also extremely spacious—though sized like a Rogue, the Ariya’s interior is more Murano-like. Ergonomics and seating also deserve praise.
The Ariya offers a choice of two batteries with wither FWD or AWD. Range can be as long as 465 km for 2024, while the top-line model generates a stout 389 horsepower. On the flip side, the base 214-horsepower model with 330 km of range is not that interesting except for the low price.
