2025 Toyota GR Corolla Gets Extra Torque, Quick-Shifting Autobox Option

Hot hatch enthusiasts who prefer to focus on steering and give their left foot a break will be happy to learn that the Toyota GR Corolla will be offering an available eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and control logic optimized for sporty driving when the 2025 model arrives this winter.

Unlike the autobox in the GR Supra and GR86, which changes gears based on the car’s reactions including speed and deceleration, this one is able to detect throttle and brake pedal pressure in order to anticipate the optimum time to shift even before the car reacts to anything.

Four drive modes can be selected including Sport, Normal, ECO and Custom. Toyota claims non-professional drivers will be able to go even faster around a track thanks to the new transmission, which also happens to come with a transmission oil cooler and adapted launch control system.

The autobox will be available with the new Premium model replacing the Circuit Edition above the base GR Corolla for 2025. Also offering the six-speed manual transmission, the Premium model boasts a carbon fibre roof, vented hood and matte black wheels.

Meanwhile, the turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine produces the same 300 horsepower as before, but peak torque is increased from 273 lb-ft to 295 lb-ft. Toyota engineers have also made enhancements to suspension components and tuning.

For their part, designers have revised the front bumper to achieve a better balance between cooling and aerodynamic needs. The interior features new trim elements on select surfaces and controls for a sportier look and feel. There’s even a new head-up display and GR Sport suede seats in Premium models.

Pricing for the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla starts at $51,475 including freight, PDI and other fees. The Premium model retails for $59,477 with the manual gearbox or $61,697 with the autobox. Can you believe that, a Corolla for more than 60 grand?
