Your Jaguar Will Read Your Mind

If you have driven a luxury car recently, you probably experienced some kind of driver surveillance technology. Some of them look at your eyes' movements, while others make sure you don’t change lanes too erratically, all to ensure that you are awake and fit to drive. If the systems detect otherwise, the car will suggest you stop and get a coffee or take a rest.

Jaguar Land Rover wants to go one step further: the British manufacturer now wants their cars to read your mind.

It might sound like science fiction, but Project Sixth Sense is very real (and making me somewhat uncomfortable, if I’m honest). Using a wide array of sensors, the car would be able to read your brainwaves to make sure you are mentally fit to drive and to ensure you are not daydreaming; if that were to happen, the steering wheel and pedals would vibrate to remind you that you are in control of a moving vehicle.

With some more sensors in the seat, the computer could also monitor your heartbeat to ascertain your health. If you were to suddenly pass out, the car would realize it and stop by itself.

While this new technology has potential, I’m curious to see how it will end up being used… especially by marketers. I envision a future where you think to yourself ‘’I could eat a little something’’ and the GPS suddenly chimes in, rerouting you to the nearest McDonald's.
