First Look at the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Plug-in Hybrid

As promised, Jeep launched its new plug-in hybrid offensive at the 2020 CES in Las Vegas with the introduction of the Wrangler 4xe, Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe.

It’s the first public appearance for the PHEV variant of the Wrangler. The other two were previewed last year at the Geneva Auto Show.

Jeep wants to become the greenest SUV brand in the world by offering an electrified version of each product by 2022.

At CES, we found a Wrangler 4xe with subtle blue accents, a unique badge on the rear hatch and a charging port on the front left fender, just below the windshield.

Unfortunately, no other details were provided by the company. All we know at this point is that the Wrangler 4xe will be the first Jeep PHEV to go on sale in North America. Specifications and other key information will be disclosed in Geneva at the beginning of March.

For example, does the Jeep Wrangler 4xe use a V6 like the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid or a four-cylinder engine like the Renegade and Compass PHEVs? And does it offer more range than the 50 kilometres originally advertised for its smaller siblings? We’re anxious to find out.

In the meantime, customers who want a more efficient Wrangler can opt for a Sahara model featuring eTorque mild hybrid technology, either with a turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 270 horsepower or the Pentastar V6 producing 285 horsepower. The system delivers slight fuel savings along with an extra 90 pound-feet of torque.
