New Kia Stinger Coming With Fresh Styling, Beefier Turbo Engine

Published on August 27, 2020 in News by Guillaume Rivard

A refreshed and sportier Kia Stinger is on the way and we now know all the major highlights including powertrain details.

The main change is the addition of a new turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. These numbers are a big improvement from the 255 horsepower and 260 pound-feet generated by the 2.0-litre turbo, which Kia Canada quietly dropped along with the base GT-Line trim several months ago. Will we get the new one here? Let’s hope so.

Meanwhile, the twin-turbocharged 3.3-litre V6 powering the Stinger GT and GT Limited models will get a new electronic exhaust valve system that provides three extra horsepower for a total of 368. Torque is unchanged at 367 pound-feet. Said system incorporates a small butterfly valve in the exhaust that remains closed in Comfort and Eco mode, but opens in Sport mode to deliver a throatier sound. This will be music to the ears of driving enthusiasts. We can’t wait to hear it.

The eight-speed automatic transmission will carry over, of course. While select markets will retain a RWD option, look for AWD to still be the only choice in Canada.

The updated Kia Stinger also promises better safety with advanced driver assistance features like semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist, plus the blind spot monitor introduced with the Telluride midsize SUV (the blind spot image is displayed between the gauges when you activate a turn signal). Rear Occupant Alert and Safe Exit Warning will be appreciated by parents, in particular.

Other changes include redesigned headlights and taillights, some new interior accents and materials, as well as a larger 10.3-inch infotainment screen.

Sales of this new Kia Stinger are scheduled to begin in South Korea later this summer, with other markets to follow in the next few months. The car should land in Canada as a 2022 model.
