52,000 Hondas and Acuras in Canada Have Seat Belts That May Unlatch

Japanese automaker Honda is recalling approximately half a million vehicles in North America, including just over 52,000 in Canada, to fix a problem with the seat belts.

The recall affects the 2017-2020 CR-V compact SUV, 2018-2019 Accord midsize sedan, 2018-2020 Odyssey minivan and 2019 Insight hybrid sedan. The 2019-2020 Acura RDX compact SUV from Honda’s luxury brand is also affected.

According to Transport Canada, the seat belt buckles for the driver and front-passenger seats could wear over time and may not latch securely. If this happens, the seat belt could unlatch unexpectedly, putting the occupants in danger in the event of an accident.

Honda says it has no reports of injuries caused by the problem, which is the good news.

Affected owners will be notified by mail starting in mid-April and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealership to inspect the driver and front-passenger seat belt assemblies.

In most cases, the seat belt buckle release buttons will be replaced. If the dealer determines that a buckle can't be repaired, it will be replaced with a new part.

Last month, Honda announced a recall on the 2018-2020 Fit and 2019-2022 HR-V—nearly 24,000 units in Canada—because the battery voltage could drop when starting the engine, potentially causing the display audio system not to start. Drivers would be unable to view the image captured by the rear-view camera in that case. The easy fix is a software update to said display.
