Two Hyundais Are AJAC’s 2023 Canadian Green Car, SUV of the Year
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 5 have just been crowned 2023 Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Green Utility Vehicle of the Year by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). It’s the first time in AJAC history that one manufacturer has pulled off a double win.
Remember, these two vehicles also won the prestigious World Car of the Year award in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

“I want to sincerely thank the members of AJAC for once again recognizing the high quality of our products,” said Don Romano, president and CEO of Hyundai Canada. “With our IONIQ models, Hyundai is committed to maintaining a leadership position in the transition towards an all-electric future. We are pleased with the enthusiasm and validation from accredited automotive journalists for IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6.”
Curiously, another electric sedan, the BMW i4, won AJAC’s 2023 Canadian Car of the Year award back in February. It appears it wasn’t green enough for voters this time around.
You see, those journalists have to consider a different set of qualities, putting more emphasis on fuel economy, range and efficiency, but also the "green-ness" of the entire vehicle's production cycle, with sustainability efforts throughout the supply chain coming into play.
The IONIQ 6 impresses with up to 581 km of range, world-class aerodynamic performance and a spacious interior that makes the most of Hyundai’s acclaimed e-GMP architecture.
"Congratulations to Hyundai on its impressive double success! In light of the accolades the IONIQ family is garnering while all automakers are working hard on electrification, we have to admit that the Hyundai recipe has ingredients that appeal to many, including the AJAC specialists," said AJAC president Michel Crépault.
The Green Vehicle of the Year awards were presented during the opening ceremonies of EcoRun, an annual event organized by AJAC that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles in order to inform consumers of all the powertrain options and vehicles available in-market.
The 2023 edition takes AJAC members on a scenic drive across British Columbia, starting in Vancouver and ending in Kelowna. You can follow the action on social media using the hashtag #EcoRun.
