2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe: That's More Like it!
The new Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe is the result of a consolidation between the C-Class coupé and the E-Class coupé, both of which recently left the brand's catalog. From a physical point of view, the operation seems to have been a success. The CLE is more imposing in terms of dimensions than those it replaces, particularly in terms of length. The swooping Mercedes-Benz lines are clearly recognizable and elegantly complement the signature Mercedes-Benz front fascia. This thing is a head-turner.
The Car Guide was invited to drive the CLE 300 4MATIC in Spain last summer. It impressed us with its comfort and versatility, but disappointed us when it came to performance. Naturally, Mercedes was quick to find a solution and added a new member to the CLE Class family born in the AMG stables. Behold the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53, the CLE Coupe for those who breathe performance.

Bolder Looks, Well-Deserved Power Boost
Physically, AMG has enlarged the CLE to increase its already imposing presence. The front fenders are 58 mm wider, while the rear quarter panels are 72 mm larger. At the front, the grille with vertical slats is immediately noticeable, distinguishing the fascia from that of the CLE 300. This AMG also boasts an exclusive hood featuring the Affalterbach badge.
Under this massif hood, Mercedes has swapped the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that develops 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for a for a turbocharged in-line six that churns out a copious 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque - a considerable improvement over the base model. Thanks to the overboost function, up to 443 lb-ft of torque can be deployed for 12 seconds. The engine is mated to the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive designed for AMG models, which is fed by the 9-speed transmission. This transmission is equipped with a motor-generator that takes care of the light hybrid (48 V) portion of the powertrain.
Sharper Senses
On the chassis front, the CLE 53 is equipped with AMG Ride Control, an adaptive suspension system that allows the driver to modify damper settings in real time via the drive mode selector.
The driver also benefits from adaptive steering, which varies in precision according to the chosen drive mode. Rear wheel steering is also on the standard equipment list, offering high-speed agility and low-speed maneuverability with a turning radius of up to 2.5 degrees.
If that's not enough to satisfy the needs of the most demanding drivers, the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package adds a Race driving mode that pushes the limits of the CLE 53 to smash track times, plus a Drift mode that will make the car tail-happy. This package adds active engine mounts that enable the car to strike a better balance between comfort and sportiness.
AMG Digital Interior
Inside, the CLE 53 serves a familiar Mercedes recipe, with digital instrumentation behind the steering wheel, displayed on a 12.3-inch screen. In the central portion of the dashboard, the vertically positioned 11.9-inch screen provides access to the various functions of the MBUX system.
But this cabin stands out in the CLE range for its many AMG features, such as the red stitching throughout the cabin, the seats emblazoned with the Affalterbach performance division's logo, and the steering wheel packed with controls found on all AMG models. Lighter, more supportive competition seats is also available as an option.
The CLE 53 is scheduled for launch in the second part of 2024. Pricing and availability information should be available closer to launch date.
