2025 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance Has Insane Power, Torque

If for some weird reason you thought the Mercedes-Benz SL roadster lacked gusto despite its twin-turbocharged V8 producing 577 horsepower, we’re happy to report that a brand new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance will launch in Canada in late 2024 as a 2025 model.

By optimizing the V8 and pairing it with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor on the rear axle, engineers managed to increase output to an insane 805 horsepower and up to 1,047 lb-ft of torque. Of all the cars that wear the three-pointed star, only the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 E Performance 4-Door Coupe generates more power (831 hp) and peak torque (1,084 lb-ft). Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is achieved in just 2.9 seconds in both cases.

The electric motor is integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed transmission and limited-slip rear differential. The lightweight, high-performance 6.1kWh battery, inspired by technologies proven in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team's Formula 1 hybrid race cars, is also located above the rear axle. A fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system completes the drivetrain.

While the automaker says charging takes place via the 3.7kW on-board AC charger, pure electric range is not specified.

Drivers will find eight modes to choose from in the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance—"Electric," "Battery Hold," "Comfort," "Slippery," "Sport," "Sport+," "RACE" and “Individual”—all of which adjust the response of the engine and transmission, steering characteristics, suspension damping and sound. The drive modes can be selected via the centre display or the steering wheel buttons. Additionally, there are four different levels of regenerative braking (except in “Slippery” mode), the most aggressive enabling one-pedal driving much like an all-electric vehicle.

Elsewhere, the car stands out from the standard SL with an integrated charging port door for the hybrid system, an "SL 63 S" model badge highlighted in red and distinctive grooved trapezoidal twin tailpipe trims. "E PERFORMANCE" badging on each front fender also indicates the exclusive hybrid drive. The 20- and 21-inch wheels are available in a variety of designs and finishes.

Finally, one of the many highlights in the interior is the pair of AMG sports seats offering superior comfort and lateral support. Optionally, they can be replaced by AMG Performance seats with integrated headrests and ventilation openings in the seatbacks. Three massage programs offer enhanced comfort during long trips.

Pricing for the 2025 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance will be announced closer to launch late in 2024. For the record, the current Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ retails from $221,500, not including freight, PDI and the federal luxury tax on six-figure cars.
